Golakganj is a town in Dhubri district, Assam, with a population of 13,020 (Census 2011). Located on the eastern bank of the Gangadhar River and approximately 5 km from the Indo-Bangladesh border, the town is experiencing evolving development needs that require structured spatial planning. The Golakganj Municipal Board was established in 2022 to oversee urban development, implementation of government schemes, and local governance functions.
Spatial Decisions prepared a GIS-based Master Plan supported by spatial analysis and field assessments. The work included geo-referencing and digitization of cadastral maps and physical features, followed by preparation of the base map and ground-truth verification.
Primary and secondary data were collected, including land use surveys and traffic volume studies, to evaluate existing development patterns and infrastructure conditions. Based on the analysis, we developed GIS-based Existing Land Use and Utility Maps and prepared proposed spatial plans, including Land Use, Zoning, Circulation, and Public Utilities maps. The assignment concluded with the preparation of a comprehensive Master Plan Report and Zoning Regulations to guide future development and regulatory control.
The GIS-based Master Plan provides Golakganj with a structured spatial development framework to manage urban expansion, infrastructure provision, and environmental conservation effectively. It enables informed land allocation, improved traffic and utility planning, and protection of environmentally and culturally significant areas.
By establishing zoning regulations and clear development guidelines, the plan strengthens institutional capacity for urban governance and supports sustainable, well-regulated growth for both the municipal area and surrounding rural settlements.
