Integrated water resource management and climate resilient urban development: Central Vietnam

Client: Belgian Technical Cooperation/ MPI-Technical Support Unit | Duration: Jun 2017 – Dec 2018 | Location: Hanoi, Vietnam

The project integrates climate change analysis and hydrological studies in the context of increasing urban development in the project provinces of HaTinh, Ninh Thuan and Binh Thuan. Results from these studies are used to support the regional spatial plan of the river basin and the Master Plans (MP) of the urban areas of the selected provinces.
Following a strategic spatial planning approach and sustainable urban development principles, focus was given on the areas around water bodies, the river mouth, and the coastal edge, with the purpose of transforming the urban areas as part of a larger Eco-city, following the principles of the World Bank concept. The use of GIS-based tools is applied to integrate the data from the studies to support the analysis and formulation of the SSP approach.

Key Tasks Achieved

  • Review of available information from selected project cities: HaTinh, Ninh Thuan,
  • Urban reconnaissance and field reviews to assess current state of urbanisation, proposed expansion limits, and assess environmental and social conditions
  • Communicate the “Green City” based urban development approach using “green infrastructure” for water resource management.
  • Integrate downscaled climate change models and hydrological studies through GIS into a spatial planning process
  • Develop a GIS-based analysis of the urban development plans and identify opportunities for climate resilience
  • Prepared a cartographic modelling based approach to support the Climate Resilient Urban Planning
