Regional Urban Development Strategy and Economic Development Plan for South-Central Nepal (TA9384 NEP)

Client: Department of Urban Development and Building Construction (DUDBC) | Duration: 24 months | Location: Kathmandu, Birgunj, Simara – Nepal

The TA is designed to help build National and Regional Level capacity building in Urban Planning and accelerate much-needed investments for improved urban development in Nepal, through more proactive and effective Spatial Planning Strategy and Strategic Investment Planning.
The project has four interrelated activities pertaining to urban development, with most of them strongly linked to capacity strengthening through “on-the-job” training and development of specific guidelines. As part of the project assignment, the team will work with national government agency, the Department of Urban Development and Building Construction, selected municipalities in the urban economic corridor from Birgunj to Simara-Jaitpur, collectively forming the corridor region

The project will cover (i) development of a spatial structural plan and spatio-economic development strategy for the economic corridor region, Iii) development of a review framework for urban development planning process for 185 municipalities in Nepal, using 10 representative municipalities for detailed review, (iii) develop guidelines for integration and alignment of urban infrastructure, such as water/ waste water/ storm water/ electricity etc. as integrated urban street development, and (iv) revise the National Urban Development Strategy and Business Plan in the context of the earlier activities.

Services Description

  • Development of project implementation vision and framework
  • Develop activity-based capacity strengthening plan using “participatory” and “interactive” learning forums, information exchange platforms, and collaborative dialogue with urban planners and decision makers
  • Coordinate multi-disciplinary team of international and national experts through on-site and off-site presence.
  • Lead the activity for development of structural and economic plan for urban economic region
  • Lead the activity for updation of Nationals Urban Development Strategy
  • Provide direction to GIS-based information review and analysis for urban and regional planning
  • Integrate economic analysis, sectoral analysis, disaster risk considerations, and regional development strategies to develop an economic growth corridor as part of a National Spatial Strategy addressing trade linkages across the Nepal-India border.
